Teen Schizotypal Personality Disorder is a mental health condition that’s characterized by delusions, behaviors of teens intentionally distancing themselves from others, and paranoia. Teen Schizotypal Personality Disorder is usually less severe than Teen Schizophrenia, but does have some similar characteristics and overlapping symptoms.
The most central symptom of Teen Schizotypal Personality Disorder is teens experiencing an extreme level of paranoia that leads them to avoid close relationships with others. Sometimes teens might also have strange beliefs and thinking patterns, may portray themselves strangely (such as they way that they dress), and/or tend to ramble when they speak. Teens with Schizotypal Personality Disorder might also have strong beliefs in superstitions and/or the supernatural and tend to give important meaning to seemingly arbitrary events. Usually teens with Schizotypal Personality Disorder only have a few close relationships, such as with family members, because of the extreme level of paranoia, which makes it increasingly difficult for them to trust and open up to others. Instead, the teens retreat into fantasies or imagined alternate lives, as a way of escaping their current experience.
One of the initial challenges of teen schizotypal personality disorder treatment is it can be difficult for teens to trust their therapists and consequently, to engage in treatment. Therefore, it’s very important for therapists to carefully establish a therapeutic environment that feels safe to the teens and to build trust, over time.
Once this dynamic is established, therapists can work with teens during teen schizotypal personality disorder treatment to help them identify what sorts of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are present that lead to their anxiety, and how this anxiety manifests as a form of paranoia. Over time, therapists can then help teens to correct those belief systems and ultimately, make changes that will allow them to decrease paranoia and also engage in healthy, open relationships with others.
