At Paradigm New York, we pride ourselves in designing our treatment plans, drawing from a wide range of therapeutic approaches and resources. One of these is Teen Insight Oriented Therapy, which was one of the first forms of therapy developed and is derived from Freud’s psychoanalysis. Teen Insight Oriented Therapy is designed according to the premise that supporting teens to gain insight into themselves as individuals can lead to extraordinary opportunities for mental and emotional healing. This insight includes many different aspects of the teen, including thought patterns, beliefs, desires, feelings, and fears.
The roots of Teen Insight Oriented Therapy is still largely the foundation of Freud’s therapy, which is that teens’ current symptoms, struggles, and behaviors are either directly or indirectly related to unresolved issues and/or experiences from childhood, including conflicts or trauma that may have occurred during this time. The belief is that these childhood issues will continue to manifest in teens’ lives and affect the teens’ beliefs and behaviors, even if teens are not consciously thinking about them. Therefore, in order for teens to gain relief from the outer symptoms and behaviors, they must explore and address the inner underlying conflicts and challenges.
A Teen Insight Oriented Therapy session is very much like a traditional talk talk-therapy session, in which therapists will encourage teens to speak honestly and freely about whatever thoughts and feelings come to mind. The specific Insight Oriented approach will manifest in that the therapists will ask questions that encourage teens to explore and recognize potential unconscious links to their childhood, which may be playing a role in their current struggles. This process is different for all teens, as they become aware of, and work to address, the unconscious connections to their past experiences.
At Paradigm New York, our therapists incorporate Teen Insight Oriented Therapy, as one technique in teens’ overall treatment plans. This type of therapy has been shown successful in helping to treat a wide range of mental health and substance abuse disorders, including but not limited to: Depression, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, and Substance Abuse. This type of therapy lends itself well to Paradigm’s New York overreaching therapeutic approach, which is to provide holistic-minded treatment that supports teens to address the deepest factors at play, which are resulting in the teens’ current symptoms and struggles.
