For adolescents, school and academic responsibilities make up a majority of their time and often, a large part of their stress. Regardless of how teens are performing in school with grades, this academic stress very often increases, while teens are struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues. Because we recognize the important role of academic responsibilities in teens’ lives, we thoroughly incorporate academics into all of our teen treatment plans, in our Education Program. One of the foundational cornerstones of this program is our On Site Classroom.
At Paradigm New York, we have an on site classroom and full-time teacher, in order to ensure teens have the ability to either get caught up or maintain their current studies, while in treatment. All teens engage in an academic assessment within 48 hours of arriving at Paradigm New York, which allows our teacher and therapists to coordinate and work cohesively, in order to address academic goals that are in line with, and further, the teens’ overall treatment goals. In the academic assessment and treatment design, we’re not only looking at overall grades and performance, but from a more holistic standpoint, we’re assessing how academic stress and struggles relate to the teens’ overall symptoms, stressors, and challenges, overall. Because so many different substance abuse and mental health conditions present symptoms that challenge academic success (fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, lack of confidence) we understand that it’s important to identify any potential relationships between school work and teens’ current symptoms. This way, we can address any present cause-and-effect relationships which may be contributing to teens’ current struggles. In this way, we’re not only aiming to help teens’ succeed academically; we’re aiming to support them to succeed in all things, including their academics.
It’s worth noting that his collaborative nature of our treatment leaders is only possible because of us keeping our house population low, limited to 8-10 teens, at one time. This combination of small class size, a full-time teacher, the onsite classroom, and dedicated time for studies, provides the environment and support teens need to address academics, while they’re here. In fact, very often what we find is that teens not only are able to return to school caught up, but have made academic, mental, physical, and emotional progress such that they are better equipped to be successful in their schools, following treatment with us.
At Paradigm New York, we offer an Educational Support program, designed to address and support all of teens’ academic needs, while in treatment with us. Paradigm New York is located in Westchester, New York, and is a residential treatment center, for adolescents.
