Treatment for Teens with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is a physical condition similar to Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), but is more severe.  Similar to PMS, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is characterized by severe mood disturbances, such as agitation, anxiety, and Depression.  These mood changes can be so strong that they disrupt teens’ lives in numerous ways, including their ability to think clearly, concentrate, communicate clearly and/or appropriately with others, and function adequately in their day-to-day responsibilities.

The symptoms that teens with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder experience can often last for 1-2 weeks leading up to a menstrual cycle, causing teens considerable discomfort for a significant portion of the month.  About 5-10% of women are estimated to have the condition.  While symptoms always vary according to the individual, some of the most common include:

  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Depression
  • Brain fog
  • Unexplained extreme mood shifts

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is a prime example of why it’s so important to carefully consider Co-Occurring Disorders, throughout the diagnosis process.  Because the symptoms of this condition are so similar to a number of other illnesses, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder an often be overlooked and/or undiagnosed, which leads to mistreatment and/or insufficient treatment of teens.  Especially because of the mood swing symptoms involved with the disorder, it’s vitally important for therapists to discern between symptoms that are similar to Mood Disorders, such as Anxiety and Depression.

Treatment for teens with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder often involves a careful combination of efforts, designed to address both physical and mental aspects of the condition.  For teens that have Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder as a Co-Occurring Disorder, therapists will work alongside our medical health professionals to create the most cohesive and complete treatment plan possible.  For instance, in some cases, teen girls have experienced severe hormonal changes, which have resulted in hormonal imbalances and, consequently, mood disturbances.  In instances like these, our therapists not only want to help teens manage and gain relief from symptoms, but also, help them make physical gains, where possible, which will address the root of their symptoms, as well.
