Teen Problem Internet Use is a behavioral condition in which teens’ excessive use of the internet creates negative effects in the teens’ lives. While internet use has become a regular everyday practice for many people, some teens can form addiction to the internet, in which the teens end up withdrawing from the relationships and responsibilities in their real lives, in order to spend excessive amounts of time online. It’s common for Teen Problem Internet Use to be present as a Co-Occurring Disorder, especially with things such as Bipolar Disorder, Depression, and Anxiety Disorder.
The most fundamental symptom of Teen Problem Internet Use is not actually the internet use itself, but rather, the manner in which the excessive nature of use causes disruptions and/or negative effects in the teens’ lives. Some of the most common negative effects that might occur as a result of excessive internet use are things such as: dropping grades and/or trouble in school, apathy toward other activities, disengagement from people and relationships, moodiness, and failure to handle responsibilities and commitments.
It’s common for teens with Problem Internet Use to continue foregoing responsibilities and relationships, even once they realize the harm being done. Because the behavior becomes compulsive, some teens find it impossible to quit and/or decrease their internet use, even if after making significant efforts to do so. Making positive changes and/or decreasing use will be even more difficult for teens that are struggling with a Co-Occurring Disorder, from which they potentially use the internet to escape.
Teen treatment for Problem Internet Use involves a combination of therapy types and techniques. Treatment begins with our careful diagnostic process, which takes special consideration of any other illnesses or disorders which may be present. Beyond this, we often implement a combination of Individual and Group talk therapy sessions, especially concentrating on the underlying emotional issues and triggers that are leading the teens to disengage their current experiences. We then help teens to explore and address these stressors while also supporting them to decrease internet use time, so that they can not only gain freedom from internet use, but also, their need for internet use as well.
