Teen Acute Stress Disorder is a type of Anxiety Disorder characterized by severe symptoms of fear and panic, triggered by a specific event. Teens can begin to experience symptoms either during or following the traumatic event and in certain cases, Teen Acute Stress Disorder can lead to PTSD.
Many of the symptoms of Acute Stress Disorder overlap with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or other anxiety disorders. While symptoms always vary according to the individual, some of the common symptoms include:
- Overwhelming, consistent feelings of fear and stress
- Increased heart rate
- Sweating and tightness of muscles
- Inability to concentrate and/or make decisions
- Tendency to withdraw from others
- Tendency to have an apathetic attitude
- Difficulty functioning in day-to-day responsibilities
Because Acute Stress Disorder is specifically tied to a traumatic or severely stress incident that the teen experienced, teen acute stress disorder treatment often begins and is built around this event. Depending on the severity of the symptoms teens are struggling with, therapists may recommend medication, to help abate symptoms and therefore, help teens to engage in other steps of treatment.
Beyond this, therapists work with teens to help them gradually explore and address the ways in which the trauma has affected them, both emotionally and mentally, and what habits and thought patterns have developed, as a result. Over time, as teens learn to observe and connect these behaviors and thoughts, they can begin to make intentional changes which will help to reduce their stress, and ultimately, allow them to recover from the experience.
It can also be very helpful for teens to partake in different types of remedies and treatments that are helpful in easing anxiety and reducing stress, such as yoga, meditation, massage, and/or acupuncture. Because the mind/body connection is so evident, especially with regard to this anxiety disorder, we find that addressing the relaxation of the body often supports the healing of the mind, and vice versa.
